What are the PS5 GPU specs and equivalents?

Sony has collaborated with AMD for the graphics card used in the Sony PS5. It uses a custom graphics card based on RDNA 2 architecture. The technical specifications of the PS5 GPU are almost the same as that of the RX 6700 but it comes with more VRAM.

The PS5 GPU is capable of handling the latest AAA games at 1440P resolution at an FPS of 30-60 depending on the exact title. It looks like most of the upcoming AAA games will be limited to 30 FPS, as the PS5 Pro will be providing 60 FPS.

In this article, we will check the best PS5 equivalent GPU, so stay tuned.

What GPU Does the PS5 Use?

As mentioned above, the PS5 uses a custom graphics card that has the same core as that of the RX 6700. With 2304 shader processing units, 144 Texture Mapping Units, and 64 Render Output Units, the PS5 GPU shares the same hardware as the RX 6700.

As for the memory, the PS5 GPU comes with 16 GB of VRAM, which is 6GB more than that of the RX 6700. The memory performance of the graphics card is also better, as it uses a 256-bit memory interface instead of the 192-bit interface found on the RX 6700.

1. AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT

amd radeon rx 6700 xt

AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT is one of the company’s most popular graphics cards, and it probably holds the largest share in the market when it comes to AMD graphics cards. It is based on the AMD RDNA 2.0 architecture, which proved to be a massive improvement over the last generation’s flagship GPU, RX 5700 XT.

The graphics card comes with 2560 shader processing units. The graphics card has 160 TMUs and 64 ROPs, making it slightly better than the PS5 GPU.

The graphics card’s memory is 12 GB lower than that of the PS5 GPU, and its memory bandwidth is 384 GB/s, which is two-thirds of that of the PS5 GPU.

Overall, the performance of AMD RX 6700 XT is quite the same as the PS5 GPU, as it comes with a slightly better core performance and lower memory performance.

  • Cores: 2560 Units
  • Video Memory: 12GB GDDR6
  • Memory Speed: 16 Gbps
  • Power Requirements: 650W Power Supply

2. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti

nvidia geforce rtx 4060 ti

The next contender we have on the list is the infamous NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB. This graphics card is particularly infamous for its bad pricing due to the large VRAM size, as you can get the RTX 4070 at a slightly higher price. However, this large memory buffer makes it very similar to the PS5 GPU, as both units share a 16 GB VRAM.

The graphics card offers 4352 CUDA cores, 136 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. There are 34 RT cores on the graphics card as well and the performance of these cores is arguably better than the performance of PS5 GPU.

As for the memory of the graphics card, it has a 16 GB VRAM as mentioned earlier but it is miles behind when it comes to memory performance. The GPU uses a 128-bit memory interface and that is why it has a low memory bandwidth of 288 GB/s. This means that the card won’t be able to perform well at high resolutions.

Overall, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB comes with great core capabilities and satisfactory RayTracing performance but mediocre memory performance.

  • Cores: 4352 Units
  • Video Memory: 16GB GDDR6
  • Memory Speed: 18 Gbps
  • Power Requirements: 550W Power Supply

3. AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT

amd radeon rx 7700 xt

The next graphics card we have on the list is AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT. This graphics card is based on the latest RDNA 3 architecture. The raw performance of this graphics card is almost the same as that of the RX 6800, which makes it a suitable PS5 equivalent GPU.

As for the technical specifications, there are 3456 shader processing units on the graphics card, which is a big bump from the RX 6700 XT. The memory of the graphics card is slightly improved from the RX 6700 XT and now it is almost as fast as the PS5 GPU, providing a memory bandwidth of 432 GB/s.

Overall, the performance of AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT is awesome for future games at 1440p resolution and it serves as a great equivalent of PS5 GPU.

  • Cores: 3456 Units
  • Video Memory: 12GB GDDR6
  • Memory Speed: 18 Gbps
  • Power Requirements: 700W Power Supply

4. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti

nvidia geforce rtx 3070 ti

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is the mid-range graphics card from the previous generation and just like the RX 6700 XT, it has a great share in the market. The performance of this graphics card is amazing for 1440P gaming and the low price makes it an eye candy for mid-range gamers.

The graphics card comes with 6144 CUDA cores along with 192 texture mapping units and 96 render output units. The memory performance of the graphics card blows all of the above cards, having a memory bandwidth of 608 GB/s, due to the usage of GDDR6X memory. However, the low VRAM capacity of 8 GB becomes a hindrance in the latest games when the texture quality is pushed to Ultra.

Overall, the performance of the RTX 3070 Ti is marvelous for its low price and if you can compromise on medium-quality Texture settings, this graphics card will serve you well.

  • Cores: 6144 Units
  • Video Memory: 8GB GDDR6X
  • Memory Speed: 19 Gbps
  • Power Requirements: 750W Power Supply

5. AMD Radeon RX 6800

amd radeon rx 6800

The last graphics card that we have on the list is something that I personally recommend. The reason we have placed it at the last is its low availability. AMD Radeon RX 6800 is the perfect graphics card if you have a mediocre budget and want to do high-end gaming.

The graphics card comes with 3840 shader processing units in combination with 240 texture mapping units and 96 render output units. The graphics card holds a great overclocking potential as well and you can easily push it above 2400 MHz.

The best thing about the RX 6800 is its memory, as it comes with 16 GB of memory buffer and a memory bandwidth of 512 GB/s. This means that you can have a worry-free experience in terms of memory.

All in all, the AMD Radeon RX 6800 is a powerful graphics card that provides fast and ample memory with a very capable core. If you can get your hands on this graphics card, it will last you many years before going down.

  • Cores: 3840 Units
  • Video Memory: 16GB GDDR6
  • Memory Speed: 16 Gbps
  • Power Requirements: 650W Power Supply
